This past weekend we celebrated Mr. Eat a Duck I Must’s birthday in parts. On Friday, after his extremely-classy-blind-Popeye’s-VS-Harold’s-fried-chicken-challenge dinner, I presented him with his first gift- the Farnsworth House from the Lego Architecture series.  We had watched a documentary on the Farnsworth House earlier this year and were immediately fascinated by it.  We are far from being Architecture buffs, we simply know what we like.  Back in September, we saw a press release about Lego’s latest model in their Architecture series- a version of the Robie House by Frank Lloyd Wright.  While I looked through the whole series, I realized they also offered a miniature Farnsworth House that was released in April of this year.  Sparks went off in my brain and I immediately started to plan out this birthday weekend.

We got started on it early the next morning.  As you can see there aren’t a lot of pieces to this set (546) but we took our time in building this together.

This is serious business.  Even Baby Duck got working on a project of his own.

like father like son

Though the construction is simple, I can’t tell you how much we love this set!

This birthday weekend would not have been complete without a visit to the real thing, which is only about 1.5 hours outside of the city.  It also turned out to be the very last day the house would be open to visitors this year so we were extremely lucky that Mr. Duck’s birthday wasn’t any later than this past weekend!

We were only allowed to take exterior photos of the house and there was a small bit of renovation that prevented us from taking a good picture of the house in it’s entirety, but it was a truly marvelous house to see in person.  There’s so much detail and genius to it that we can’t even begin to discuss so I’ll let these photos do the talking.

If you ever find yourself in Chicago and you love architecture, I think this is definitely worth a trip to the boonies. Plus, you can also score yourself some of these miniature chairs ;) It’s too bad they were not small enough to fit into the Lego house ;)

This is so cool! Happy Birthday Mr. Duck! My birthday was this past weekend too! Perhaps our bdays are close. :) I <3 legos, so I think that is the most awesome present. :) I love those miniature chairs too! We actually own a larger version of one!

thanks so much, jen!  so… are you saying you own a real barcelona chair? ;)

Ha ha ha, I had no idea that chair was so famous! Shows you how architecturally dense I am. I a guessing ours must be some sort of replica, heh heh. It’s a loveseat & it’s black, but it looks just like that one. :)

Ahhhh, jealous!  I dissected this house in school and probably have 50 pages of diagrams to show for it. :)  The architecture lego kit is freaking awesome.  And look how big baby duck is!!!!  Oh my goodness!!  Love the photos you got of the house.  :)

That is a really cool house. I’m from the midwest, and just might make it over there. My mother has a miniature chair collection, so that’d be amazing. I wonder if they can be ordered…

those particular miniature chair replicas run maybe 2-300!! chiasso.com carries a cheaper set.  also, i don’t think they open up the house to public again until april, so check the website first! :)
