For a while we had been hearing good things about Smoque but were a bit lazy about making the short trek to the northwest side of the city. And especially since our favorite bbq haunt is a lot closer to us (Honky Tonk BBQ). But when our foodie friends called us up for dinner at Smoque last Friday, how could we say no?
Smoque is the quintessential neighborhood restaurant at Pulaski and a one way street (Grace). It even comes equipped with a street sign warning you to park at your own risk in a residential permit area! But if you get there early enough, there's a small parking lot behind the restaurant. It's a BYOB and you order from the counter. There's ALWAYS a line- which is a great sign! And forget trying to save a table for you and your guests. Patrons are seated only after they order- which in the end helps to expedite the whole process.
We ordered a taste of all the proteins but our favorites were definitely the Memphis-style ribs and Texas sausage. The dry rubbed ribs were so tender and the Texas sausage was so juicy and flavorful. Yum! All meats come with a side of their own bbq sauce, which was a thin vinegar base sauce with a kick of spice. Not your usual thick sweet sauce.
